The drill is one of those basic hand tools every woodworker needs to have to make holes and drive screws, but it requires some finesse and a little practice to get the most out of them. They are either corded or cordless and they come in different styles.
The most
common style is the standard twist drills because they serve for general
purpose drilling. They work very well in wood especially if you are drilling
pilot holes for screws but they can leave a slightly ragged hole if you are
drilling holes for dowels or plugs. In that case, it will be better to use the
brad point bits.
The brad
point, otherwise called the spur bit has a sharp point at its centre which
prevents the bit from wandering when you start drilling. The spurs on either
side make the hole smoother so that you come out with a cleaner and more
accurate hole.
Next is the
Auger bit which works in a similar way to the brad point but it has a centre
crew tip which enables the bit pull itself into the wood when you are drilling
a deep straight hole. It is available in various lengths so that if you need to
drill a hole several feet deep the Auger bit will do the job.
If you are
drilling much larger holes, the Forstner bits are your best bet. You may need
to clamp a scrap piece of wood on the exit side to help with the blow out. Forstner
bits come in various diameter sizes and they are capable of drilling
overlapping holes but if you need to drill holes of even larger diameters, you
will need the hole saw since a hand drill will require a lot of power to turn.
If you don’t
have a drill or these bits you can order from an online tool store.
